The North Shore is a hidden gem for couples who love nature, adventure, and a touch of wilderness. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life and connect with each other in a setting that feels both intimate and awe-inspiring. Whether you’re hiking along the Superior Hiking Trail, exploring the iconic Split Rock Lighthouse, or simply enjoying a quiet moment by the shore, the North Shore provides a stunning backdrop that’s perfect for your love story.

Minnesota makes it easy for couples to get married, whether you’re planning a traditional wedding or a simple elopement. Here’s what you need to know about the legal requirements:

  • Marriage License: To get married in Minnesota, you’ll need to obtain a marriage license from any county in the state. You don’t have to get it from the county where you’re getting married.
To obtain your marriage license to get married in Minnesota, COMPLETE and SUBMIT the application online, then both parties MUST APPEAR at a participating county office to obtain your marriage license BEFORE your ceremony.

Minnesota doesn’t have a waiting period, so you can get married as soon as you have your license, which is valid for six months.
  • Officiant: In Minnesota, your ceremony must be performed by an authorized officiant, which can include clergy, judges, and other public officials. You can also have a friend or family member officiate if they become ordained online, as long as they’re recognized by the state.
  • Witnesses: Minnesota requires two witnesses over the age of 16 to sign your marriage certificate, so if you’re planning an elopement, you’ll need to bring along a couple of close friends or family members, or even ask your photographer or a park ranger to witness your ceremony.

The North Shore is full of stunning locations that are perfect for an elopement. Here are some of my favorite spots:

  • Gooseberry Falls State Park: Gooseberry Falls State Park is one of the most popular spots on the North Shore, Gooseberry Falls offers a mix of dramatic waterfalls, lush forests, and scenic overlooks. You can have your ceremony right by the falls or on one of the nearby trails that offer more privacy.
  • Split Rock Lighthouse State Park: If you’re looking for a location that combines history with stunning views, Split Rock Lighthouse is a fantastic choice. The lighthouse perched on a cliff above Lake Superior makes for an iconic backdrop, and the nearby trails and pebble beaches offer plenty of spots for photos.
  • Palisade Head: Palisade Head is for couples seeking a dramatic backdrop, Palisade Head’s towering cliffs and panoramic views of Lake Superior are hard to beat. It’s a popular spot for adventurous couples who want an unforgettable location for their vows.
  • Tettegouche State Park: For couples who love a bit of adventure, Tettegouche State Park is a must-see. With its rugged cliffs, waterfalls, and miles of hiking trails, you can choose from a variety of beautiful locations to say your vows, whether it’s on the shores of Lake Superior or high above on a cliff with panoramic views.
  • Artist’s Point in Grand Marais: Artist’s Point is located in the charming town of Grand Marais, Artist’s Point offers a picturesque setting right on the edge of Lake Superior. The rocky outcrop extends into the lake, providing a secluded spot for an intimate ceremony with the sound of waves in the background.
  • Lutsen Mountains: If you want a truly breathtaking view, consider eloping at Lutsen Mountains. You can take a gondola ride to the top of Moose Mountain and exchange vows with a sweeping view of the lake and surrounding wilderness.

The North Shore is beautiful year-round, but each season offers a different experience:

  • Spring (April to June): Spring is a time of renewal, with blooming wildflowers and rushing waterfalls. The weather can be a bit unpredictable, but the landscapes are lush and vibrant.
  • Summer (July to August): Summer is the most popular time to visit the North Shore, with warm weather and long days. The lake is at its most inviting, and the trails are perfect for hiking. However, you’ll want to plan ahead as this is also the busiest season.
  • Fall (September to October): Fall on the North Shore is nothing short of magical, with the leaves turning brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow. For this reason, the cooler temperatures and stunning foliage make it a perfect time for an elopement, especially if you love the idea of a cozy, autumnal setting.
  • Winter (November to March): If you’re up for a winter wonderland elopement, the North Shore is breathtaking in the winter. Snow-covered trees, frozen waterfalls, and the quiet beauty of the season make for a truly unique and intimate experience. Moreover, be prepared for cold weather and potentially challenging conditions.
